356 STUDENTS AWARDED OVER J$13 MILLION

Kingston, Jamaica: The Bob & Rita Marley Foundations proudly announce the award of over J$13 million in educational support to Jamaican students through its Marley for Education Programme and the Rita Marley Scholarship Programme. The Foundations are pleased to provide critical financial assistance to 356 deserving students from across the island for the start of the 2024/2025 school year.

At 37 years old, Venice Black has defied the odds to pursue her passion for Fine Art Ceramics at Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts. As a single mother of seven, Venice has faced countless challenges, from financial struggles to personal losses, yet she has never wavered in her commitment to her dreams. Equally inspiring is Monique Fenton, a 19-year-old who has faced challenges that would overwhelm many including losing her primary caregiver and grappling with her mother’s health issues. Despite the lack of financial support from her biological family, Monique is set to embark on a degree in Medicine and Surgery at the UWI, with plans to specialize in Pediatrics.

What do these two women have in common? They are just two of the 356 recipients of scholarships, bursaries, and grants from the Bob & Rita Marley Foundations.

“We are deeply committed to supporting the educational aspirations of our Jamaican youth,” said Ms. Cedella Marley, CEO of the Bob Marley Group of Companies. “These scholarships are not just financial awards; they are investments in the future leaders of our nation, empowering them to achieve their full potential.”

The Marley for Education Programme, a key initiative of the Bob Marley Foundation, continues to uphold the legacy of the Hon. Robert Nesta Marley OM by offering vital support to students in need. This year, the programme has awarded 322 bursaries to students at the Basic, Primary, and High School levels and 24 scholarships to students pursuing tertiary education. These awards cover essential educational costs such as school fees, books, and uniforms, ensuring that recipients can focus on their academic journey without the burden of financial stress.

The Rita Marley Foundation, under the vision of the Hon. Dr. Rita Marley OJ, OD, LITT, remains committed to empowering young Jamaican women through education. The Rita Marley Scholarship Programme has awarded J$4 million in scholarships to 10 outstanding female students pursuing tertiary education in various fields.

The Bob & Rita Marley Foundations continue to build on a tradition of giving that began in the 1970s, when Bob Marley himself provided financial support to families in need. Today, the Foundations carry forward this legacy, making a tangible difference in the lives of hundreds of Jamaican students each year.

Since its inception, the Marley for Education Programme has been a beacon of hope for students in Jamaica’s most vulnerable communities, offering them a crucial pathway to academic achievement. Over the past decade, the programme has invested more than J$47 million in the futures of over 3,500 students, focusing on those who need financial support to continue their education and elevate their academic performance.

This year’s scholarship recipients span a wide variety of study areas, reflecting the rich variety of talent from both urban and rural communities across Jamaica. Each summer, the programme opens its application process, followed by a rigorous evaluation and selection procedure to ensure that the most deserving students are awarded this life-changing opportunity.
