For Immediate Release (June 6, 2025 – Toronto, Canada) –

Reggaddiction and Sunray Grennan, the dynamic vocalist/singjay of the Toronto-based reggae collective Reggaddiction, is proud to announce the release of their latest single, “Ray the Lover” distributed by Tuff Gong International. It is a vibrant reimagining of Sunray’s father Winston Grennan’s (aka Winston Richards) iconic track, “Joe the Killer” (also known as “Turn on the Lights”).

Originally released under the name Winston Richards, Winston Grennan chose to keep his identity as a drummer a secret, preferring that the focus remain on the song itself. There are many recordings from Winston under the name Winston Richards, spanning his work as both a drummer and a singer. In fact, one of his most notable releases, “Joe the Killer”, was recorded during a session in Jamaica with an unscrupulous producer who later told Winston the tapes were no good. Despite this, the track went on to become a hit in England, with Winston never receiving a copy or any compensation for his contribution. He only learned of the success when a friend called to tell him, years later, that he had a hit record.

“Joe the Killer” was a gritty, street-level anthem filled with dark imagery, but Sunray Grennan, his son, has reimagined the track with a modern and uplifting twist. In “Ray the Lover”, Sunray transforms the narrative into a joyful celebration of love, connection, and the healing power of positivity. The song retains the familiar hook, “Turn on the lights, let me see your smiling face,” but now, it’s all about letting in the light of love and filling the heart — not about threats and violence.

“When I say ‘I came to fill your space,’ it’s not just about being there physically — it’s about filling the heart. Life can leave gaps, but love is the most powerful way to heal and fill those voids,” says Sunray Grennan, reflecting on the deeper meaning of the song’s lyrics.

“Ray the Lover” is a song that radiates joy and warmth, capturing the essence of Sunray’s unique stage presence. Known for his unmatched energy and showmanship as the Singjay of Reggaddiction, Sunray’s performances are an embodiment of love and unity, always uplifting and inspiring audiences. In “Ray the Lover”, he continues that mission, spreading a message of love that is both personal and universal.

The track marks a significant moment in Sunray’s artistic journey. As the son of legendary Jamaican drummer Winston Grennan, who famously recorded with the Wailers, Sunray has inherited a rich musical legacy that he is now shaping and evolving with his own unique sound. Combining his father’s rhythmic influence with his own style, Sunray blends classic Jamaican reggae with a modern, feel-good vibe that speaks to a new generation of music lovers.

While “Joe the Killer”, painted a dark and cinematic portrait of life in Jamaica’s tough streets, “Ray the Lover” transforms that darkness into a beacon of light. With a message of healing, love, and connection, the song is a refreshing antidote to the challenges of modern life.
